As demonstrated by the name of this chapter, certain films like G.I. Jane place a woman firmly in the role of hero, the actor, rather than the heroine, someone who is acted upon. In The World War II Combat Film: Anatomy of a Genre, Basinger creates four ground rules for a woman becoming a hero in the war film rather than a heroine. She becomes a hero when her role complies with one of four conditions:

A woman who defies conventional roles and redefines her life on her own terms, even if she ultimately chooses to be a wife and mother. She undergoes a process of questioning, as a hero would.
